Former Laker dies at 72: Flynn Robinson, also known as “Instant Offense” on the 1971-72 served Lakers team that brought Los Angeles its first NBA title, died Thursday. He was 72.Flynn’s wife, Nancy Pitts-Robinson, told the Lakers he died Thursday at Keck Hospital in Los Angeles. Called “Mr. Instant Point” by late Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn, the 6-foot-1 Robinson averaged 9.9 points and 2.2 assists in 64 games in 1971-72, helping the Lakers win an NBA-record 33 consecutive games and the franchise’s first title in Los Angeles.“We are very sad to hear of the passing of Flynn Robinson,” said Jeanie Buss, the Lakers’ executive vice president of business operations. “Flynn played an important role on the 1971-72 Lakers team.” Robinson averaged 14 points per game during his professional career. He was an All-Star with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 1969-1970 season and during his eight years in the NBA also played for the Cincinnati Royals, Chicago Bulls and Baltimore Bullets.Robinson had his best season in 1969-70 with Milwaukee, averaging 21.8 points and 5.5 rebounds in 81 games and appearing in his lone All-Star game. In seven NBA seasons with Cincinnati, Chicago, Milwaukee, the Lakers and Baltimore, the former University of Wyoming star averaged 14.5 points and 3.1 assists. He finished his career in the ABA with the San Diego Conquistadors in 1973-74.

Zach Galifianakis has been taking long-time friend 87-year-old Elizabeth “Mimi” Haist, a laundrywoman in Los Angeles, to Hollywood movie premieres for years.Upon hearing that Haist will accompany the star to the “Hangover III” premiere, the New York Daily News interviewed Haist about her unlikely friendship with the 43-year-old actor and comedian:Haist first met Galifianakis in 1994, when the then-unknown comic was a newcomer to Los Angeles trying to get his big break. He moved into an apartment around the corner and was soon a regular visitor to Fox Laundry, where she volunteered — surviving off tips from customers.The Hollywood star stopped coming after the success of the first “Hangover” movie.“Maybe he has his own washer and dryer now,” Haist said.Two years ago, the funnyman discovered that Haist — who was married earlier in life but has been on her own for the past 30 years — was homeless. He swooped in and found her a one-bed, one-bath apartment and started covering her rent and utilities.“If he’s in town, he takes me. Otherwise he lets me take a friend. I dress up nice and a friend helps me with my makeup. It’s fun, not something I’ve ever dreamed I’d experience. The limo takes me home afterwards,” Haist told the Daily News.

The Winner of Eurovision This Year Wasn't Bad

This is an update to my last entry from a few weeks ago about Eurovision where I railed against the contest for producing a lot of shitty music. I still stand by that statement. But to be fair, I didn't pay any more attention to Eurovision after writing that and I just now figured that I might as well see who won.Eurovision has declared a winner. Only Teardrops by Emmilie De Forest, Denmark's entry. I'm not blown away by it, but it's a pretty decent song.So yeah, something decent won this year. It's better than that Norwegian guy's awful Fairytale song that won a few years back. That song was the worst piece of music to ever come out of Scandanavia. And that's the region of the world that crapped out ABBA. I'd take Dancing Queen over that garbage any day of the week.I like how this went from sort of praising Eurovision for this year's winner being decent, into ripping into some fiddle playing jerk's awful song. But seriously, Fairytale can go fuck itself.
