Watch: Little Mix Impress US Fans With Live Showing at L.A's The Grove

UK hit girl group Little Mix performed a four-song showcase for fans at The Grove in Los Angeles on August 9th. Their performance was part of the Teen Vogue 2nd Annual 0Back To School0 Kick-Off Party. Hundreds of American 'Mixers' (that is, Little Mix's fans) gathered around the outdoors stage to witness their idols perform live renditions of; "How Ya Doin'?", "Wings", "Change Your Life", and "DNA", all songs and official singles from Little Mix's debut album "DNA". Watch videos below! They killed it! Their acoustic performance of "How Ya Doin'?" was particularly excellent. The new arragenement they gave the song was just awesome. I'm glad Little Mix are still doing promo in the States, by the way. I mean, it's quite clear they won't score any real hit over there with the "DNA" album, but they are in the process of building up a US fan base. For their next record, they'll probably focus on America from the very beginning, and try to get a Top 40 hit there. They got the talent, and teenagers in the US seem to like them a lot.

Bobby Vee goes on stage with gets tribute from Bob Dylan in St. Paul.

"The young Dylan once played several concerts as part of Vee’s band in the Fargo, N.D., area well before both hit it big."The 72-year-old [Bob Dylan] told the crowd he has gone on to share stages with everyone from Mick Jagger to Madonna, but he said Vee is one of the most powerful performers he has played with.Dylan then asked for a round of applause for Vee, whom he said was in attendance, before covering Vee's “Suzie Baby.”Vee is younger than Bob Dylan — he's 70 — but he has Alzheimer's disease. You can listen to Vee's old recording of "Suzie Baby" here. It has a bizarrely long, lush intro. From the Wikipedia article on Vee:Vee's career began amid tragedy. On "The Day the Music Died" (February 3, 1959), the three headline acts in the line-up of the traveling 'Winter Dance Party'—Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper—were killed, along with 21-year-old pilot Roger Peterson, in the crash of a 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza v-tailed aircraft (registration #N3974N) near Clear Lake, Iowa, while en route to the next show on the tour itinerary in Moorhead, Minnesota. Velline, then aged 15, and a hastily-assembled band of Fargo, North Dakota, schoolboys calling themselves The Shadows volunteered for and were given the unenviable job of filling in for Holly and his band at the Moorhead engagement. Their performance there was a success, setting in motion a chain of events that led to Vee's career as a popular singer. The 2 Bobby Vee songs I remember hearing on the radio the most back in the old days were: "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" and "Take Good Care of My Baby." The first one has a really crazy video, which I've blogged about before:CORRECTION: Sorry, Vee didn't go onto the stage, but was in the audience, when Dylan talked about him and played his old song.

Portugal Shows How To Deal With Drugs

The United States has spent well over a trillion dollars in waging a "war on drugs", and we have filled our prisons with mostly non-violent drug offenders. In fact, we have put so many people in prison for drugs that we now lead the world in both the number of prisoners and the number incarcerated per capita our population. No other country, not even those considered to be police states with no citizen rights, even comes close to having as many people incarcerated as the U.S. does. And it hasn't worked at all. In spite of all the money spent and people locked up, drugs are still easily available to anyone who wants them and the number of users has not fallen significantly. Our "war on drugs" has been a spectacular failure by any measure. Unfortunately, most citizens and elected officials in this country continue to believe there is only one way to deal with the drug problem -- through the criminal justice system, believing that after 40 years of abject failure the system will somehow magically begin to work. Well, it won't!But there is another way, a way that actually does work -- and one European country has shown us how to do it. Ten years ago, Portugal decriminalized ALL drugs. And contrary to popular belief in this country, it did not result in a new epidemic of drug addicts -- just the opposite. In that 10 year period they have been able to cut the number of "problematic" users in half (intravenous users and those who repeatedly use "hard" drugs). How have they done this? They have done it by honestly educating the public and by providing treatment for those drug users. And they have done this while spending less money -- because education and treatment are much less expensive than incarceration. All Portugal did was recognize that drug use is a medical and social problem -- not a legal problem. So they stopped treating it like a legal problem. Isn't it time that we learned from Portugal's success (and our own miserable failure), and did the same thing?

An Evening With Jim Henson and Frank Oz (1989)

In July 1989, Jim Henson and Frank Oz made an appearance at the Puppeteers of America national festival at MIT in Boston. The event was documented and added to the Puppeteers of America audio-visual archive with a special introduction by Frank Oz made in 1993. Throughout the one-hour discussion, Henson and Oz perform Kermit the Frog, Rowlf the Dog, Cookie Monster, Animal, Fozzie Bear and Grover. Some of the topics include the history of Henson Associates, research on Sesame Street, and behind the scenes info about the Muppets, The Dark Crystal, The Jim Henson Hour, and Little Shop of Horrors. Frank Oz also demonstrates how they perform the Muppets on film and television.
